Explication of a Poem: Making a Fist by Naomi Shihab Nye

The title contributes, to us readers as it shows, that we are alive and strong as long as we can still make a fist. The person speaking in this poem is speaking to her daughter after a long car ride of days and days, maybe even weeks. Her mother is giving her comfort and reassuring her that even though people go through obstacles, you need to be strong enough to go through many aspects in life to bring happiness. And just tells her if you can still make a fist you are still alive. You will make it through because she believes her daughter has the strength to get through all the obstacles they have and will go through. This poem is very easy to understand, I think she did very well with her words and references of the content. I believe this story develops as a true statement, I think the lady speaking with her daughter has gone through similar obstacles as a child and her mother reassured her as she does for her daughter. It is always important to tell your children that they are strong and can make it through anything and that’s all she is trying to do. Many people face difficult times in life and that’s why it sounds so much like a true statement then just a story. Strength is very important to have and is always nice to have someone’s reassurance. Main idea of this poem is Strength. To never give up, and you are strong enough to get through anything even at rock bottom. The figurative language is symbolism the writer is giving her worlds to create the image using more meaningful words rather than a writers experience.

Choices based on appearances of their options Essay

Often times people make choices based on appearances of their options- the result of the choice tends to be strongly negative and it is hard to admit a mistake has been done. Often times things are not what they seem, when we trust this illusion the choice made is hard to accept and it is hard for others to reason how we came to that decision. This is the theme that we see in the dialogue between Hamlet and his mother Gertrude in the III, iv, ll. 63-117. This theme is shown through the use of diction, imagery, repetition, and characterization. In this dialogue it is both Gertrude and Hamlet that speak to each other. At this point hamlet criticizes her strongly about Claudius and her sense of judgment. The event that has just occurred preceding this dialogue is the murder of Polonius by Hamlet- as he mistook him for Claudius. At this point in the play Hamlet knows that Claudius has killed his father and is now sure he wants to avenge him. What happens after this dialogue is that the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears to remind him of his mission, Gertrude is unable to see the ghost but Hamlet goes on to explain to her everything after the ghost goes away. The first techniques to be discussed are imagery and diction and their role in portraying the first part of the theme, that being â€Å"often times things are not what they seem†. The first line of the passage says: â€Å"the counterfeit presentment of two brothers† in reference to Hamlet’s father and Claudius. From the very beginning of the passage the sub-theme of deception of perception is brought about. Hamlet goes on to degrade Claudius by use of insults (made up of images, in turn made up of diction). â€Å"A murderer and a villain; A slave that is not twentieth part of the tithe Of your precedent lord; a vice of kings; A cutpurse of the empire and the rule, That from a shelf the precious diadem stole, And put it in his pocket! † In this quote Hamlet is unveiling the true nature of Claudius, especially by treating him of a murderer and a cutpurse (pickpocket). These two insults are references to the murder of Hamlet’s father and the thievery of the crown; two crimes that prove to be very deceiving of a king. Once Hamlet had explained this to Gertrude she realized her wrong choice. At this point we can characterize Gertrude as being repressive and denying. This is shown through her diction and imagery; â€Å"O Hamlet, speak no more:Thou turn’st mine eyes into my very soul; And there I see such black and grained spots As will not leave their tinct. † Her demand of Hamlet to cease his attacks show that she is unable to face the truth, she goes on to say â€Å"these words, like daggers, enter in mine ears† which proves further that the truth about her choice is too painful for her to admit. The image of the daggers in conjunction with her â€Å"black and grained spots† bring about the omnipresent theme of order versus disorder- which can apply in this situation as Gertrude is in a disorderly situation, where she cannot accept the truth. Another technique that shows her fear of the truth is repetition. â€Å"No more† is repeated three times as she begs hamlet to stop his attacks, showing an increasingly greater desire to avoid the truth. This fits in to the main theme as she clearly shows that it is hard to accept the wrong choice that she has made. Finally the last aspect of the main theme of the passage- how it is difficult to reason a bad choice- is brought up by hamlet more so than by his mother. In the beginning of the passage he goes on to question her choice of lower quality of man, comparing his father to god’s and later referring to Claudius as a criminal. â€Å"See, what a grace was seated on his brow; Hyperion’s curls; the front of Jove himself; An eye like Mars, to threaten and command; A station like the herald Mercury† All the references are to male gods of great importance and strength such as Mars that is god of war, Hyperion that is god of the sun (as is Jove) and finally Mercury the messenger god, and god of commerce. He goes to say that this husband was great but now she is married to a â€Å"mildew’d ear†- an image that is degrading to Claudius. â€Å"†¦ have you eyes? †¦ Nor sense to ecstasy was ne’er so thrall’d† In this long quote Hamlet goes to question what could’ve possibly given his mother to marry this man. Without giving his mother the opportunity to explain herself, he cancels out the possibility of love, as she is too old to feel the excitation and passion of love. This fits in the theme as Hamlet shows that he is unable to understand Gertrude’s decision, as for him it lacks reasoning and doesn’t offer her a chance to explain herself. Through this text analysis we can see how the theme of how often times things are not what they seem, when we trust this illusion the choice made is hard to accept and it is hard for others to reason how we came to that decision. This theme represents the situation that Hamlet was in as he was by himself in having to find out if the ghost was real or unreal, and if it was evil or good- it is the situation he was in when he had to act so strangely to the whole exterior world, when inside he knew he was sane. At this point in the play hamlet is wrong to attack his mother in such a way that is why the ghost of Hamlet’s father comes at the end of the scene to remind him of the real mission. He let his private griefs get to him. After his father’s visit Hamlet makes his mother a confident and becomes more trusting towards her. She on the other hand thinks her son is delusional. In conclusion everyone has their reason to make choices which cannot be comprehended by others, and they may have negative ramifications.

A Strategic Brand Management According to the book Strategic Brand Management by Kevin Lane Keller (2008) , Identifying and creating brand positioning is the first and important stage of the strategic brand management process. Positioning effects on a founding benchmark and works toward building a strong brand by helping marketers to design, to implement, to solidify or to sustain brand associations. Aaker (1991 ) also supports the idea that the brand position can offer clear direction to a communication program implementation. To establish the position of a brand, the concept of it should be clearly defined. Criticism of the literature reveals numerous meanings and clarification of positioning. Sekhar, (1989) states that the concept of positioning developed from research on market segmentation and targeting. Kotler (2003, p. 308) defines brand positioning as â€Å"the act of designing the company’s offering and image to occupy a distinctive place in the mind of the target market. The end result of pos itioning is the successful creation of a customer-focused value proposition, a cogent reason why the target market should buy the product†. Arnott (1992, 1993) parallels the idea by stating that positioning is, correlated to the rivalry, management attempt to adjust the tangible features and the intangible views of a marketable contribution. Furthermore, Kapferer (2004, p. 99) emphasises on the distinctive characteristics that make a band different from its competitors and alluring to the public. In addition, Sengupta (2005) enhances the term of perception that indicate the core of the brand in terms of its functional and emotional benefit in the decision of customer. Also, it is shown as points in perceptual space and thought up a product class. In essence, Keller outlines the idea behind the concept of brand positioning that involves four aspects; target market identification, the nature of competitors, the ideal of points of parity, and the points of difference. Point of difference, on the other hand, comprises of strong, favorable and unique associations for a brand based on attribute or benefit association in the mind of customer. It is associations that customers believe that they couldn’t find in the competitive brand. It is considered by functional basis, performance-related consi deration and imagery related criterion, which are competitive strengths and insight about consumers’ motivations. Reeves and Ted Bates advertising agency (1950) also support the common concept of PODs in terms of unique selling proposition (USP) that promoting use to compel customers to buy product that competitors could not race. Mamaâ€⠄¢s dream is selfless because there is no personal gain. Walter’s goal is to earn more money; being financially successful is important to him. After the arrival of the life insurance money, Walter and Mama get into a fight over how Walter has changes; Mama asks Walter why he has become obsessed with money, Walter reply â€Å"because it is life†(74). For Walter money comes before everything since no money equates to no life ; therefore making money become Walter’s number one priority because he believes validates his existence. After Mama gives Walter part of the insurance money, Walter talks to his son about how he is going to â€Å"change [their] lives† (108) he foreshadows the future he plans for the family.

Although online professors typically over look spelling and grammatical errors when responding to students’ posts, they are liable to take away points. Most of the time they deduct participation points if the grammar and spelling is so bad that they cannot understand the point the student is attempting to make. Students whom normally struggle with spelling and grammar are forced to improve their writing skills.In turn, the necessity of grammar, spelling, and punctuation benefits a student’s overall education experience. Moreover, the increased writing in a classroom environment can be a double-edged sword. The replacement of writing rather than speaking in a classroom can yield a negative effect on a person’s life. Online environments inadvertently encourage social isolation. A student who may have had social challenges or anxiety about speaking in front of a group of people in the past can easily continue isolating themselves from others rather than facing their fears.When the student graduates, findin g employment can be increasingly difficult without these necessary interpersonal skills. Employment laws differ in a global environment - Essay Example Employment laws differ in a global environment in a number of ways. These differences are usually evident in terms of employment, severance policies, consideration for employment, employment litigation, human rights, compensation, discharge, and statutory protection among others (Honeyball, 2008). A good example of a country whose employment laws are different from those of the US is Canada. For example, in Canada, employers must provide employees with at least pay in lieu or a statutory notice of termination, whereas, in the US, employment is ‘at will’ and a notice of termination to an employee is only required if a contract was signed. Another difference in employment laws in US and Canada is seen in the human rights perspective. Both Canada and USA prohibit discrimination in employment on grounds such as religion, ethnic origin, gender, and color among others. When it comes to disability, discrimination is also prohibited in both countries, and employers are required to make necessary accommodations for workers with disabilities. However, in Canada, employers face tougher conditions than in the US since they are required to accommodate drug addicts and alcoholics. These two conditions are recognized as disabilities by Canadian employment laws, and they require accommodation (Honeyball, 2008). There is no valid reason for these differences. All employees and employers should be equally protected by the law; regardless of the region they are located. It does not make sense to protect employers or employees in one area against something, and totally disregard the same thing in another area. Therefore, I do not agree with these differences. The main reason for this is because these differences create an unnecessary rift. For example, why would employers in Canada be required to accommodate drug addicts and alcoholics?
